Crystal Trull would make an excellent San Diego Unified School Board trustee. Her strong communication skills and experience as a parent and advocate in SDUSD, as well as a professor and consultant for nonprofits, make her uniquely and ideally qualified to be an effective trustee.
As a parent of three students in SDUSD schools, Crystal has been working “in the trenches” for many years on school committees (like SSC, SGT, and PTA/PTO) as well as several district-wide committees (including as chair of the District Advisory Council of Compensatory Education) to improve outcomes for ALL students. Her vast experience in nonprofit leadership and management using data-driven strategies has given her practical knowledge that would bring new perspectives on how SDUSD can most effectively manage its resources. And her experience teaching at both USD and UC San Diego provides her with the ideal balance of understanding education’s challenges from all perspectives: student, parent, and educator.
I have found Crystal to be both a good listener and effective communicator. She is interested in hearing differing opinions while also presenting her counter-perspectives with sincerity and respect. These skills are an invaluable asset to neutralize San Diego Unified School Board’s long history of “groupthink”, the preference for conformity over critical thinking that can result in poor decisions. She also recognizes the importance of regular and effective communication with stakeholders, and while SDUSD trustees have historically isolated themselves, Crystal will host regular office hours to understand stakeholders’ concerns and work on solutions.
In addition to the experiences and skills that would make Crystal a great school board trustee, most importantly, she will make the primary focus of every decision from the perspective of what is in the best interests of students.
