Student Grades vs. State Standards Scores Disparities
San Diego Unified School District in the News - Disparities!

The Voice of San Diego Article
A recent article from Jakob McWhinney at Voice of San Diego calls out disturbing disparities between student grades and scores on state standards tests. Check out the article here.
In 2020, San Diego Unified approved changing the grading policy to Standards Based-Grading (SBG). SBG was rolled out without any public input or consultation with teachers, and completely changes the grading scale so that what used to be an A is now really a B or C.
What Does It Mean?
We can all agree that students should be given support and opportunities to learn. However, simply changing the grading system does not guarantee that students have the necessary skills to be successful. As a parent with three kids in the district, at three different schools, I have a personal stake in SDUSD grading policies. Whether a student wants to go to college or enter the workforce after graduation, they must have foundational math, English, and critical-thinking skills. Academic excellence must be priority number one.
